You can check your state tax refund status by visiting your state’s department of revenue website and using its online refund lookup tool. Nearly every state with an income tax offers one, and most will show your refund status within a few minutes if you have your Social Security number, filing details, and the exact refund amount from your return.
Find Your State’s Refund Tracker
Each state runs its own tax refund portal, separate from the IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool you may have used for your federal return. To find yours, search for your state’s department of revenue (sometimes called the department of taxation, franchise tax board, or comptroller’s office) and look for a refund status or “Where’s My Refund?” link. The Federation of Tax Administrators maintains a directory of all state tax agency websites at taxadmin.org, which can point you to the right place quickly.
Most state portals are available around the clock, so you don’t need to call during business hours. Bookmark the page if you plan to check back, since refund status updates on a set schedule rather than in real time.
Information You’ll Need
State refund tools ask for a few identifying details to pull up your return. The exact combination varies, but you should have these ready:
- Social Security number (or ITIN if that’s what you filed with)
- Exact refund amount as shown on your filed return, down to the dollar and cents
- Filing status (single, married filing jointly, head of household, etc.)
- ZIP code or mailing address, sometimes just the numeric portion of your street address
The refund amount needs to match exactly what’s on your return. If you round it or guess, the lookup will fail. Pull the number directly from your tax software, your filed return, or the confirmation you received after filing. Some states also ask for the tax year, so make sure you’re selecting the correct one if the tool offers a dropdown.
How Long Before Your Refund Shows Up
The biggest factor in processing time is how you filed. E-filed returns move through the system much faster than paper returns, often by a factor of three or four.
For e-filed returns, most states process refunds within two to four weeks. Some states can issue refunds in as little as a few days after an electronically filed return is accepted, while others consistently take the full three to four weeks. Paper returns are a different story. Processing times of 8 to 12 weeks are common for mailed returns, and some states take even longer during peak filing season.
If you just filed, give the system a few days before checking. Many state portals won’t show any information until the return has been received and entered, which can take 24 to 72 hours for e-filed returns and several weeks for paper ones.
Why Your Refund Might Be Delayed
If the tracker shows your refund is still processing well past the expected window, a few common issues could be the cause.
Identity verification. States are increasingly flagging returns for identity checks to combat tax refund fraud. If your state selects your return, you’ll typically receive a letter asking you to verify your identity online or by phone before the refund is released. This doesn’t mean anything is wrong with your return, but the refund won’t move forward until you complete the verification.
Wage or income mismatches. States cross-reference the income you reported with the W-2s and 1099s your employers and payers submitted. If the numbers don’t match, even by a small amount, your return may be pulled for review. This can happen if an employer filed a corrected form or if you transposed a digit.
Credit claims under review. Returns claiming certain credits, like earned income credits or homestead credits, are more likely to be selected for additional review. Being flagged doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a problem, but the review process adds time.
Refund offsets. If you owe back taxes, unpaid child support, or certain other state debts, part or all of your refund may be redirected to cover those obligations. You’ll typically get a notice explaining what was taken and why.
In all of these cases, the refund tracker will usually show a generic “still processing” or “under review” message. If you’ve received a letter, respond to it as soon as possible to avoid further delays.
Checking by Phone
If you can’t access the online tool or prefer not to use it, most states offer an automated phone line for refund inquiries. These systems are typically available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and walk you through the same identifying questions the website asks. You’ll hear a recorded update on your refund status.
For more complex questions, such as why a refund was reduced or what to do about an identity verification letter, you can call your state’s revenue department during business hours and speak with a representative. Wait times can be long during filing season (January through April), so try calling early in the morning or later in the week when volumes tend to drop. The phone number is on your state’s tax agency website, and it’s often printed on any correspondence they’ve sent you.
When to File an Inquiry
If your e-filed return has been processing for more than six weeks and the online tracker hasn’t updated, or if you mailed a paper return more than 12 weeks ago with no movement, it’s reasonable to contact your state’s revenue department directly. Have your return, Social Security number, and any correspondence handy when you call. In some cases, the agency may need you to submit additional documentation before releasing the refund, and you won’t know that unless you reach out.
