How to Close Your SBI Credit Card Account

You can close your SBI credit card by calling the SBI Card helpline at 1860-180-1290 or 39-02-02-02, through the SBI Card mobile app, or by submitting a written request. The process is straightforward, but your account must have a zero balance before SBI Card will finalize the closure. Here’s everything you need to do, step by step.

Clear All Outstanding Dues First

SBI Card will not process a closure until every rupee owed on the account is paid. That includes your current statement balance, any unbilled transactions, interest charges, annual fees, and GST. If you have an active EMI plan (such as a FlexiPay or EMI on Call conversion), you’ll need to prepay the remaining EMI amount in full before requesting closure. Call the helpline or check your app to get the exact total outstanding, including amounts that may not yet appear on your latest statement.

Pay this amount through net banking, UPI, or NEFT/RTGS directly to SBI Card. Avoid paying by cheque right before requesting closure, since cheque clearance can take a few days and your balance won’t show as zero until the funds are confirmed.

Redeem Your Reward Points

Any unredeemed reward points on your SBI Card are forfeited once the account is closed. Before you initiate closure, log in to the SBI Card app or website and redeem your points for statement credit, gift vouchers, or merchandise. If you have a co-branded card (like the IRCTC SBI Card or Air India SBI Card), check whether those loyalty points sit in the partner program or with SBI Card, since partner program points may survive the closure while SBI reward points will not.

Cancel Recurring Payments and Auto-Debits

If you use your SBI credit card for subscriptions, utility auto-pay, or SIP payments, move those to another card or payment method before closing. Merchants may continue attempting charges on a closed card, which can result in failed payments and service interruptions. Make a list of every subscription linked to the card (streaming services, insurance premiums, mobile recharges) and update each one individually.

How to Submit Your Closure Request

By Phone

Call SBI Card’s customer care at 1860-180-1290 or 39-02-02-02 (prefix your city code). Navigate the IVR menu and ask the representative to close your card. They’ll verify your identity, confirm your zero balance, and register the request. Ask for a reference number and note it down.

Through the SBI Card App

Open the SBI Card mobile app, go to the “Service Requests” or “Account” section, and look for the option to close your card. The app will show your outstanding balance and guide you through the steps. If any dues remain, you’ll be prompted to pay them first.

By Email or Written Request

You can email your closure request to SBI Card’s customer service address listed on the back of your card or on the SBI Card website. Include your card number (or the last four digits along with your registered mobile number), your full name, and a clear statement that you want the account permanently closed. You can also send a signed letter to SBI Card’s correspondence address.

Whichever method you use, request written confirmation of closure. This can be an email, SMS, or a formal letter from SBI Card stating your account has been closed with a nil balance.

RBI-Mandated Closure Timeline

The Reserve Bank of India requires credit card issuers, including SBI Card, to honor any closure request within seven working days, provided all dues are paid. If your balance is zero and SBI Card still hasn’t closed the account after seven working days, you have grounds to escalate the matter. Start with SBI Card’s internal grievance redressal mechanism, and if that doesn’t resolve it, file a complaint with the RBI’s Integrated Ombudsman through the CMS portal at cms.rbi.org.in.

Get Your No-Dues Confirmation

After your card is closed, ask SBI Card for a no-dues certificate or closure confirmation letter. This document states that your account has been settled in full and permanently closed. Keep it for your records. It serves as proof if the account ever shows up incorrectly on your credit report or if you’re contacted about phantom charges later.

Check Your Credit Report Afterward

A closed credit card should appear on your CIBIL report as “closed” with a zero balance within one to two billing cycles. Pull your credit report about 45 to 60 days after closure to verify this. If the card still shows as “active” or carries a balance, contact SBI Card with your closure confirmation and ask them to update the credit bureau records. Unresolved discrepancies can drag down your credit score unnecessarily.

One thing to keep in mind: closing a credit card reduces your total available credit, which can increase your credit utilization ratio if you carry balances on other cards. If you have other credit cards with outstanding balances, your score may dip slightly after the closure. This effect is temporary and minor for most people, but worth knowing if you’re planning a major loan application in the near future.

What If Your Card Has a Refund Owed to You

If your SBI Card account has a credit balance (meaning SBI Card owes you money, perhaps from a merchant refund or overpayment), request a refund of that amount before or during the closure process. SBI Card will typically issue a cheque or transfer the amount to your linked bank account. Don’t let the card close with a credit balance sitting on it, as recovering that money after account closure becomes significantly harder and slower.
