How to Deposit a Check on Chime: Step by Step

You can deposit a check on Chime using the mobile check deposit feature built into the Chime app. The process takes just a few minutes: you endorse the check, snap photos of the front and back, and submit it through the app. However, not every Chime account has immediate access to this feature, so there are a few things to know before you get started.

Check If You’re Eligible First

Mobile check deposit isn’t automatically available to every Chime member. Chime determines eligibility based on your account history, direct deposit activity, and other risk-based factors. If you don’t see the deposit option in your app, you likely haven’t met the threshold yet.

Two steps can help unlock the feature. First, activate your Chime debit card if you haven’t already. Second, receive a qualifying direct deposit. A qualifying direct deposit means an ACH transfer from an employer, payroll provider, gig economy payer, or government benefit program (excluding tax refunds). Meeting both of these doesn’t guarantee access, but they’re the main factors Chime looks at. If you’re trying to deposit a U.S. Treasury check specifically, you’ll need at least one qualifying direct deposit of $1 or more before that option becomes available.

Once you’re eligible, a “Deposit a Check” option will appear in the Move Money section of the app. If it’s not there, you’re not eligible yet.

How to Deposit a Check Step by Step

Before you open the app, endorse the check. Flip it over and sign your name in ink on the back. Chime may also ask you to write “For mobile deposit to Chime account only” beneath your signature. This is called a restrictive endorsement, and the app will tell you if it’s required for your particular check. Do this before taking your photos so you don’t have to redo them.

Then follow these steps in the Chime app:

  • Tap Move Money. This is where Chime groups all transfer and deposit options.
  • Tap Deposit a Check.
  • Choose the type of check you’re depositing (personal check, payroll check, Treasury check, etc.).
  • Take a photo of the front of the check, then a photo of the back.
  • Follow the remaining prompts to confirm the deposit amount and submit.

That’s it. The app will let you know if the deposit was accepted or if there’s an issue with your photos.

Tips for Getting Your Photos Accepted

Rejected photos are one of the most common reasons a mobile deposit fails, and it’s almost always a fixable problem. Place the check on a clean, dark surface with nothing else in the frame. A dark countertop or desk works well. Make sure the area is well lit so the camera can pick up the text and numbers clearly.

All four corners of the check need to be visible in both photos. If any edge is cut off, the deposit will likely be rejected. Tap your screen to focus the camera before snapping the picture, and smooth out any wrinkles or folds in the check beforehand. A crumpled check can cause the app to misread the amount or reject the image entirely.

Deposit Limits and How to Check Yours

Chime sets individual deposit limits for each member based on account history, how long you’ve had the account, and your overall activity. There isn’t a single published limit that applies to everyone. Newer accounts with less activity will generally have lower limits, while established accounts with regular direct deposits tend to get higher ones.

To see your current limit, open the Chime app, go to your Profile, tap Account Info, then tap View Limits. This screen shows you exactly how much you can deposit per check and over a given period.

If your limit is lower than you need, setting up recurring direct deposits is the most reliable way to increase it. Chime also adjusts limits automatically over time as your account builds a longer history, so even without changes on your end, your limits may rise gradually.

When Your Funds Become Available

After you submit a check deposit, the funds won’t appear in your account instantly. Chime needs time to verify and process the check, and availability depends on the same risk-based factors that determine your limits. The app will typically give you an estimated availability date after you complete the deposit. Keep the physical check in a safe place until the funds fully clear, in case Chime needs additional verification or the deposit is reversed.

What If You Don’t See the Deposit Option

If the “Deposit a Check” button doesn’t appear in your Move Money section, you have a few alternatives. You can deposit cash at participating retail locations that accept Chime deposits, or you can transfer money into your Chime account from an external bank. For checks specifically, you could deposit the check at another bank and then transfer the funds to Chime once they clear. If you’re close to meeting Chime’s eligibility criteria, setting up even a small direct deposit from your employer or a gig platform may be enough to unlock the feature.
