You can check whether your credit is frozen by logging into your account at each of the three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. A freeze is bureau-specific, so you need to check each one separately. There is no single place that shows your freeze status across all three at once.
Check Your Status Online or by Phone
The fastest way to confirm a freeze is active is to log into your online account at each bureau’s freeze center. If you created an account when you originally placed the freeze, your dashboard will show whether your credit file is currently frozen or unfrozen. Experian, for example, displays a simple toggle that shows your freeze status in real time.
If you don’t have an online account, or prefer not to create one, you can call each bureau directly:
- Experian: (888) 397-3742
- TransUnion: (800) 916-8800
- Equifax: (888) 298-0045
Each bureau also offers a mobile app where you can view and manage your freeze. When calling, expect to verify your identity with your Social Security number, date of birth, and the numeric portion of your current address. Some bureaus let you use the automated phone system without waiting for a representative.
Why You Need to Check All Three Bureaus
Freezing your credit at one bureau does not freeze it at the others. If you froze your file at Experian but forgot to do the same at Equifax or TransUnion, those two files remain open. Lenders and creditors typically pull from just one bureau when you apply for credit, but you can’t predict which one they’ll use. A freeze only protects you fully when all three are locked down.
This also means your status can differ across bureaus. You might have temporarily lifted a freeze at one bureau for a loan application and forgotten to refreeze it. Checking each one individually is the only way to get the full picture.
What If You Lost Your PIN
Older freeze systems required a PIN to manage your freeze, and losing that PIN used to mean mailing in paperwork and waiting days. The process has gotten simpler. Experian no longer requires a PIN at all. You can create an online account and manage your freeze through identity verification instead, even if you were originally issued a PIN.
TransUnion and Equifax have similarly moved toward account-based login systems, though the process for replacing a lost PIN varies. If you’re locked out, start by visiting the bureau’s freeze center online and look for an option to create a new account or reset your credentials. Calling the bureau directly is your backup if the online process doesn’t work.
Don’t Forget Secondary Bureaus
Beyond the big three, specialty consumer reporting agencies also maintain files on you. ChexSystems, which banks use to screen new checking and savings account applications, allows you to place and check a security freeze through its Consumer Portal at chexsystems.com. You can register for an account, log in, and manage your freeze status online. If you placed a freeze with ChexSystems previously, you may need your original PIN to register, though you can request a replacement if it’s lost.
ChexSystems also offers phone support at (800) 428-9623, with an automated system available 24 hours a day and representatives available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Central Time. Innovis, another lesser-known bureau, has a similar freeze process available through its website.
Signs Your Credit Might Not Be Frozen
If you’re unsure whether your freeze is still in place, a few situations can tip you off. Getting approved for a new credit card or loan without being asked to lift a freeze suggests the bureau that was pulled didn’t have one active. Receiving a pre-approved credit offer in the mail doesn’t necessarily mean your freeze is off, since those mailings use a different type of credit inquiry that a freeze doesn’t block. But if a lender tells you they successfully pulled your full credit report without you providing a temporary lift, your freeze is either inactive or was never placed at that bureau.
The most reliable check is still going straight to the source. Log into each bureau, confirm your status, and refreeze anything that should be locked. The entire process takes a few minutes per bureau and costs nothing.
