You can link a debit card to Cash App in under a minute by tapping your profile icon, selecting “Linked banks,” and following the on-screen prompts. Cash App supports up to two debit cards and one bank account at a time, and you actually need to link a debit card first before you can connect a bank account.
Steps to Link a Debit Card
Have your card handy before you start. Open Cash App and tap the profile icon in the top-right corner of the screen (on the web version at cash.app, it’s in the bottom-left corner). Select “Linked banks,” then follow the prompts to enter your card number, expiration date, and CVV. Cash App will verify the card almost instantly, and once it’s confirmed, you can use it to send money, add funds to your Cash App balance, or receive payments.
If you already have two debit cards linked, you’ll need to remove one before adding a new card. Go to the same “Linked banks” section, select the card you want to remove, and delete it to free up a slot.
Linking a Bank Account
After your debit card is connected, you can also link a bank account directly. From the same “Linked banks” menu, choose the option to add a bank account. Cash App uses Plaid, a third-party service, to securely connect to your bank. In most cases, you’ll select your bank from a list, then log in with your online banking credentials. Plaid retrieves your account and routing numbers behind the scenes, so you don’t have to enter them manually.
If your bank isn’t supported through the instant login method, Cash App may fall back to micro-deposits. This means a small transfer (usually a few cents) is sent to your bank account, and you verify the amount once it posts. That process typically takes one to two business days. For some banks, this verification happens automatically without you needing to check your statement.
Which Cards Are Supported
Cash App works with most standard debit cards issued by U.S. banks. Most U.S.-issued prepaid cards are also supported, though withdrawing money to a prepaid card may not work. If you’re planning to use a prepaid card mainly to send money or make purchases, it should function fine for those purposes.
A few card types won’t work at all. ATM-only cards and business debit cards are not supported. If your card gets rejected during the linking process, check whether it falls into one of those categories. Some smaller bank-issued cards may also be declined if Cash App’s system can’t verify them.
Using a Credit Card
Cash App does allow you to link a credit card, but it works differently than a debit card. When you send money using a credit card, your card issuer will likely treat it as a cash advance rather than a purchase. That means you could be hit with a higher interest rate and a cash advance fee from your credit card company, which typically runs 3% to 5% of the transaction.
On the receiving end, if you run a Cash App Business account and a customer pays you with a credit card through their Cash App, the standard processing fee of 2.6% plus $0.15 per transaction applies. For personal use, linking a debit card is almost always the better option since there are no extra fees on your side.
Troubleshooting a Failed Link
The most common reason a card won’t link is a mismatch between the name on your Cash App account and the name on your card. Make sure both match exactly. If you recently received a replacement card with a new number, your old card details won’t work anymore, so you’ll need to update them manually.
Expired cards will also be rejected. Double-check the expiration date you entered. If everything looks correct and the card still won’t link, try closing the app completely and reopening it, or updating to the latest version. Some users find that switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data resolves connectivity-related errors during the verification step.
For bank account issues specifically, the problem is often on the bank’s side. Some financial institutions block third-party connections by default, so you may need to log into your bank’s app or website and authorize the connection. If Plaid’s instant verification doesn’t work with your bank, you’ll be prompted to try the micro-deposit method instead, which is slower but works with a much wider range of institutions.
Managing Your Linked Cards and Accounts
You can check which cards and accounts are currently linked at any time by going to your profile and tapping “Linked banks.” From there, you can remove a card, swap your primary payment method, or add a new one. When you send money, Cash App pulls from your Cash App balance first. If your balance doesn’t cover the full amount, the remainder is charged to your linked debit card or bank account.
If you want to change which card is used as the default funding source, simply remove the one you don’t want to use as primary and keep the preferred one linked. Cash App doesn’t have an explicit “default card” toggle, so managing priority comes down to which cards you keep connected.
