How to Put Cash on Your Cash App Card: Stores & Banks

You can add physical cash to your Cash App balance by visiting a participating retail store and having the cashier process a paper money deposit. The process takes just a few minutes at the register, and the funds typically appear in your account right away. You can also add money digitally by linking a bank account or debit card.

Deposit Cash at a Retail Store

Cash App’s “Paper Money” feature lets you walk into a participating retailer, hand cash to the cashier, and have it credited to your Cash App balance. Major drugstores, grocery chains, and convenience stores across the country participate, though exact locations vary by area. The easiest way to find one near you is through the app itself.

Here’s how to set up the deposit before you go to the store:

  • Open Cash App and tap the Banking tab on the home screen.
  • Select Paper Money.
  • Use the map to find a deposit location near you.

When you arrive at the store, go to the checkout counter or customer service desk. The cashier can either swipe your physical Cash App Card or scan the barcode displayed in the Paper Money section of your app. Once they do, hand them the bills you want to deposit. The amount is added to your Cash App balance, and you’ll see a confirmation in the app.

What It Costs

Retail cash deposits through Cash App may carry a small service fee, which varies by location. The fee is disclosed in the app before you complete the transaction, so you’ll know the exact cost before handing over any money. There are also deposit limits that cap how much you can load per transaction and per period. Check the Paper Money section in your app for the current limits and fees that apply to your account, since these can differ based on your verification status.

Tips for a Smooth Deposit

Bring only cash bills. Retailers processing paper money deposits generally do not accept coins. Have your Cash App open and ready before you reach the register so the cashier can scan your barcode quickly. If you don’t have your physical Cash App Card with you, the barcode method works just as well.

Make sure your app is updated to the latest version. Older versions may not display the Paper Money option or the store locator map. If you don’t see the Paper Money feature at all, you may need to verify your identity in the app first, which involves providing your full legal name, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number.

Add Money From a Bank Account or Debit Card

If you’d rather skip the trip to a store, you can load money onto your Cash App balance digitally by linking a debit card or bank account. Cash App lets you link up to two debit cards and one bank account at a time. One important requirement: you must link a debit card before you can add a bank account.

To link a funding source:

  • Tap your profile icon in the top-right corner of the app.
  • Select Linked Banks.
  • Follow the prompts to enter your card or account details.

Once linked, you can add money to your Cash App balance by tapping “Add Cash” on the home screen, entering the amount, and confirming. Transfers from a linked debit card are typically instant, while bank account transfers can take one to three business days depending on your bank.

Which Method to Use

If you’re holding physical cash and want it on your Cash App balance, the retail deposit is your only direct option. It’s straightforward and fast once you’re at the store, though the per-transaction fee makes it less ideal for very small amounts. Depositing the cash into your regular bank account first and then transferring it digitally avoids the retail fee entirely, but adds a day or two of waiting time. For larger or more frequent loads, linking a debit card and transferring digitally is the most convenient and cost-free approach.
