How to Register for the SIE Exam: Step by Step

Registering for the SIE (Securities Industry Essentials) exam is a straightforward process you can complete online through FINRA’s website, and you don’t need a firm sponsor to do it. The exam costs $100, and you can schedule your test date as soon as the day after you enroll. Here’s everything you need to know to get signed up.

Who Can Take the SIE Exam

The SIE is open to anyone aged 18 or older. You don’t need to be employed by a brokerage firm, and there are no education or licensing prerequisites. College students, career changers, and anyone interested in demonstrating foundational securities knowledge to potential employers can register on their own.

If you are currently associated with a broker-dealer or investment adviser, check with your firm before enrolling. Your firm may need to submit a Form U4 on your behalf to request the exam, which changes the registration process on your end.

How to Enroll Step by Step

Go to FINRA’s qualification exams page and find the SIE exam listing. Click the “Enroll” button, which directs you to the correct enrollment workflow. You’ll create a FINRA account if you don’t already have one, provide your personal information, and pay the $100 exam fee.

FINRA recommends using a Windows laptop or desktop for enrollment. Users have reported technical issues when trying to enroll on Macs, tablets, and mobile devices, so stick with a Windows machine if you can.

Once your enrollment is confirmed, your scheduling window opens the following day. So if you enroll on a Monday, you can schedule your appointment starting Tuesday. From there, you’ll book your test date through Prometric, the company that administers the exam.

Choosing Where to Test

You have two options: take the exam at a physical Prometric testing center or take it online from home with a live proctor watching via webcam.

Prometric has testing centers across the country, and the in-person experience is what you’d expect from a standardized test. You’ll go through a security check, store personal items in a locker, and sit at a monitored workstation.

If you choose online testing, you’ll need to download and install Prometric’s ProProctor application and run a system check before your appointment. On test day, you’ll use your webcam to do a full 360-degree scan of your workspace, including under your desk and chair. If your laptop has a built-in camera, that means physically lifting and rotating the entire device so the proctor can see your surroundings. An external USB webcam makes this easier.

For online testing, use a wired internet connection if possible rather than Wi-Fi, and keep your laptop plugged into a power source so you don’t lose battery mid-exam. The security protocols are essentially the same whether you test in person or online.

What the Exam Costs

The SIE exam registration fee is $100. That’s a one-time charge you pay when you enroll. If you need to reschedule or cancel, additional fees apply depending on how close you are to your test date:

  • More than 10 business days before your appointment: no fee to reschedule or cancel.
  • 3 to 10 business days before your appointment: $50 fee.
  • Within 2 business days of your appointment (or a no-show): $100 fee, equal to the full cost of the exam.

All deadlines are based on midnight Eastern Time. When you cancel, Prometric will collect the fee by credit card at that time. If you miss your enrollment window entirely and never schedule, the $100 registration fee is not refunded or transferred to a future attempt.

What Happens If You Don’t Pass

After a first or second failed attempt, you must wait 30 days before retaking the exam. After a third failed attempt, the waiting period jumps to 180 days (about six months). Every subsequent attempt after the third also requires a 180-day wait. You’ll pay the $100 fee again each time you retake.

Once you pass, your SIE result is valid for four years. During that window, you can pair it with a “top-off” exam like the Series 7 or Series 6 to become fully licensed. If the four years expire before you complete a top-off exam, you’ll need to retake the SIE.

Timing Your Registration

Because the scheduling window opens the day after enrollment, there’s no reason to register months in advance unless you want to lock in a specific date at a popular testing center. Many candidates enroll once they’re a few weeks into their study plan, then book a date two to four weeks out to create a firm deadline. If your preparation timeline shifts, you can reschedule without a fee as long as you do it more than 10 business days before your appointment.
