Mid-size companies get the most complex calculus. They often have a mix of steady-state applications (like internal databases and ERP systems) and variable workloads (like customer-facing web traffic or periodic analytics jobs). A hybrid approach, keeping predictable workloads on owned or leased infrastructure while using the cloud for variable demand, frequently delivers the best cost profile for this group.

Large enterprises with dedicated IT teams and existing data center space have the most options. They can negotiate volume discounts with cloud providers, invest in reserved capacity, or run their own infrastructure where it makes financial sense. For these organizations, the question isn’t whether cloud is cost-effective in general, but which specific workloads are cheapest in which environment.

Running the Numbers for Your Situation

To determine whether cloud computing is cost-effective for you, compare the full cost of both approaches over three to five years. On the cloud side, include compute, storage, networking, egress fees, support tiers, and any management tools. On the on-premises side, include hardware purchase and refresh, power and cooling, physical space, IT staffing, software licenses, and the cost of overbuilding capacity to handle peak demand.

Factor in the cost of your team’s time. Cloud infrastructure requires less hands-on hardware management but introduces its own operational overhead: monitoring spending, right-sizing instances, managing security configurations, and negotiating pricing commitments. Neither option is truly maintenance-free.
