When you’re writing your resume, it can be tempting to focus on the responsibilities of your job and the tasks you performed. But if you want to stand out from the crowd, you need to go beyond the basics and focus on the results of your work.
For example, rather than saying you “set up lighting and sound equipment for live performances,” you could say that you “set up lighting and sound equipment for 10 performances of hit Broadway show, resulting in rave reviews from critics.”
The second bullet point is much stronger because it provides specific details about what you did and the outcome of your work. It also includes a quantifiable result (“rave reviews from critics”).
Identify and Include Relevant Keywords
When you apply for a stage crew role, your resume is likely to be scanned by an applicant tracking system (ATS) for certain keywords. ATS programs look for keywords that are specific to the job opening, like “stage managing” or “lighting design.” If your resume doesn’t include enough of the right terms, the ATS might automatically reject your application.
To increase your chances of getting an interview, make sure to include relevant keywords in your resume. You can find them by reading through the job posting and highlighting words or phrases that are repeated. Then, use those same terms throughout your resume.
