Cash App uses Sutton Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, and The Bancorp Bank as its banking partners for direct deposit. Cash App itself is not a bank. It’s a financial services platform that relies on these FDIC-member institutions to hold your money and process deposits. When you set up direct deposit through Cash App, you’ll receive a routing number and account number tied to one of these partner banks, which is what your employer or benefits agency needs to send your paycheck.
Cash App’s Three Partner Banks
Each partner bank plays a slightly different role behind the scenes. Sutton Bank issues Cash App’s prepaid debit cards and co-issues the Visa Debit Flex Card alongside The Bancorp Bank. Wells Fargo Bank holds funds for customers who earn interest on their savings balance. All three are FDIC members, which matters for the insurance coverage on your deposits.
You don’t get to pick which bank handles your account. Cash App assigns your banking details automatically. The routing and account numbers you see in the app are what identify your specific account within Cash App’s banking infrastructure, and those are the numbers you’ll give to your employer’s payroll department.
How to Find Your Routing and Account Numbers
To set up direct deposit, you need two pieces of information: a routing number and an account number. Here’s where to find them:
- On your phone: Open Cash App, tap the Money tab on the home screen, scroll down, and tap “Direct deposit.” Your account details will appear on that screen.
- On a computer: Log in at cash.app/account, click “Money” on the left side, then click “Show” next to your account details. You’ll need to enter your PIN to reveal the full numbers.
Copy those numbers exactly as shown and provide them on your employer’s direct deposit form. Most employers also ask for the account type, which is checking. Some payroll systems may ask for the bank name. You can enter the partner bank name shown in your account details, though many people simply enter “Cash App” and the deposit processes fine using the routing and account numbers.
How Fast Direct Deposits Arrive
Cash App makes direct deposits available as soon as they’re received, which can be up to two days earlier than a traditional bank. This happens because Cash App credits your balance as soon as it gets notification of the incoming deposit rather than waiting for the full settlement process. There’s no special feature to enable or extra fee to pay for early access.
That said, the actual timing depends on when your employer or benefits agency sends the deposit. Funds typically become available within one to three business days once sent. In some cases, it can take up to five business days from the scheduled arrival date. If your deposit hasn’t shown up after five business days, check with your employer first to confirm it was sent, then contact Cash App support with the amount, date, and time the deposit was initiated.
FDIC Insurance on Your Deposits
Your direct deposit funds can be covered by FDIC insurance up to $250,000 per customer, but only if you have a Cash App Card (the physical debit card). The insurance passes through Cash App’s partner banks: Wells Fargo, Sutton Bank, and The Bancorp Bank. Without a Cash App Card, your balance is not eligible for FDIC coverage at all.
The $250,000 limit is aggregated with any other accounts you hold at the same partner bank in the same legal capacity. So if you already have a personal Wells Fargo checking account, for example, that balance and your Cash App balance held at Wells Fargo would count toward the same $250,000 cap. For most people receiving a regular paycheck, this limit is unlikely to be an issue, but it’s worth knowing if you keep large balances.
What Your Employer Sees
When your employer processes payroll, they see a standard routing number and account number, just like any other bank account. They won’t necessarily know the deposit is going to Cash App unless you tell them. This means direct deposit through Cash App works with virtually any employer or government agency that offers electronic payments, including the IRS for tax refunds, Social Security, and state benefits programs.
If your employer’s payroll system rejects the deposit or requires a specific bank name, use the partner bank name associated with your routing number. You can verify which bank it belongs to by checking the account details screen in the app, where Cash App displays the relevant banking partner information alongside your numbers.
