Defining the Pallet Truck

A pallet truck is a wheeled trolley designed to lift and transport a standard pallet and its contents across short distances at ground level. It is commonly known as a “pallet jack,” “pump truck,” or “hand truck.” The primary function involves sliding its forks beneath a pallet and using a lifting mechanism to raise the load just high enough to clear the floor. This minimal lift allows the operator to overcome friction and easily move heavy loads. The simple, low-profile design makes it a tool for horizontal transport in material handling settings.

Key Components and Basic Operation

The structure of the pallet truck is built around specific components that execute the lift and movement of a load. The two long, flat tines extending from the main chassis are the forks, engineered to fit directly into the openings of a pallet. Load wheels, also known as rollers, are at the front end of the forks, while larger steering wheels are located near the handle for directional control. The lifting action centers on a hydraulic pump mechanism housed near the handle, which converts manual effort into lifting force.

Operation begins when the operator engages a hand lever to close a lowering valve, sealing the hydraulic circuit. Pumping the tow bar handle up and down forces hydraulic fluid from a reservoir into a lifting cylinder, generating pressure that causes the forks to rise a few inches. Once the load is positioned for transport, the operator sets the control lever to a neutral position to maintain the height. To lower the load, the operator pulls the hand lever further, opening the valve and allowing the fluid to flow back into the reservoir for a controlled descent.

Manual vs. Powered Pallet Trucks

The difference between models lies in the motive force used for lifting and movement. Manual pallet trucks rely entirely on operator strength to pump the hydraulic system and push or pull the loaded device. These models are characterized by low initial cost, minimal maintenance, and reliable operation without a power source, making them suitable for intermittent use or compact areas.

Powered pallet trucks, often called electric pallet jacks, incorporate a battery-powered motor to assist with driving, lifting, or both functions. These models reduce operator strain, making it easier to transport heavier loads over extended distances. Electric versions include walkie models, where the operator walks behind the unit, or models with a fixed or foldable platform for the operator to ride on. While the motor and battery system increases complexity and cost, it improves efficiency in high-volume operations.

Primary Uses and Applications

Pallet trucks are used in environments where larger equipment, such as forklifts, would be impractical or inefficient. A primary application is the loading and unloading of delivery trucks, as the truck’s compact size allows it to operate effectively on the limited space of a trailer bed. The devices are also used for moving inventory through narrow aisles and cramped storage areas within retail backrooms and small manufacturing plants. Their maneuverability makes it possible to rearrange pallets in tight spaces, optimizing the use of floor space. The environment dictates the power source; manual jacks suit infrequent, short-distance tasks, while powered trucks match high-volume, continuous flow over longer distances.
