Cash App charges a fee of 0.5% to 2.5% for instant transfers, with a minimum of $0.25 to $1 and a maximum cap of $75. The exact percentage depends on the transfer amount and other factors. Instant transfers arrive immediately to a linked debit card, while standard transfers are free but take one to three business days.
How the Fee Is Calculated
The instant transfer fee is a percentage of the amount you’re cashing out, landing somewhere in the 0.5% to 2.5% range. On a $200 transfer at 1.5%, for example, you’d pay $3. On a $500 transfer at the same rate, you’d pay $7.50. The fee is deducted automatically from the amount you receive, so if you cash out $200 and the fee is $3, your debit card gets $197.
There’s a floor and a ceiling built in. You’ll always pay at least $0.25 to $1, even on very small transfers. And no matter how large your cash out is, the fee won’t exceed $75. That cap makes instant transfers relatively cheaper on larger amounts. A $5,000 transfer with a $75 fee works out to just 1.5%, while a $10 transfer with a $0.25 fee is 2.5%.
Instant Transfer vs. Standard Deposit
Cash App gives you two options every time you cash out. Instant transfers send money to your linked debit card right away, and you pay the percentage fee described above. Standard deposits go to your linked bank account and are completely free, but they typically take one to three business days to arrive.
If you’re not in a rush, the standard option saves you money on every single transfer. The instant option exists for situations where you need the cash available now, whether that’s covering a bill due today or accessing funds over the weekend when standard bank transfers won’t process until Monday.
Which Cards Work for Instant Transfers
Instant transfers go to a debit card, not a bank account. Cash App supports U.S.-issued debit cards from Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. Most standard prepaid cards are also supported for payments and purchases, but withdrawing to a prepaid card may not work reliably.
ATM cards and business debit cards are not supported. If your only linked payment method is a bank account without an attached debit card, you won’t have the instant transfer option available. You’ll need to add a qualifying debit card to your Cash App account before you can use instant cash outs.
How to Use Instant Transfer
Open Cash App, tap your balance on the home screen, and select “Cash Out.” Enter the amount you want to withdraw. You’ll see both the instant and standard options, with the fee displayed before you confirm. Choose instant, verify the amount, and confirm. The money typically hits your debit card within seconds, though occasional delays of a few minutes can happen.
If the instant option doesn’t appear, check that you have a supported debit card linked to your account. You can add or update your card in the app’s settings under the linked banks or cards section.
Reducing What You Pay in Fees
The simplest way to avoid the fee entirely is to use the free standard deposit whenever you can plan ahead. If you know you’ll need the money by Friday, initiate a standard transfer on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Batching your transfers also helps. Because the fee is a percentage with a $75 cap, one large transfer costs less in total fees than several smaller ones that each hit the minimum charge. Cashing out $20 five separate times could cost you $1.25 to $5 in fees, while a single $100 transfer might cost $0.50 to $2.50.
