Principles of Health Science is an introductory course, typically offered at the high school or early college level, that gives students a broad overview of the healthcare industry. What the Course Covers

The National Consortium for Health Science Education has developed a four-course framework that many programs follow. The first two courses, Foundations of Healthcare Professions and Essential Healthcare Practices, introduce core concepts and include service-learning projects where students practice basic clinical skills like taking vital signs, measuring blood pressure, and conducting vision screenings at schools and nursing homes.
The more advanced courses, Human Structure, Function, and Disease (A and B), go deeper into anatomy and physiology while connecting that knowledge to real-world settings through internships and apprenticeships in hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities. Throughout the sequence, programs can focus on specific pathways like nurse assisting, mental health work, sports medicine, or pharmacy technician training.
Even in a single introductory course, students typically encounter these core subject areas:
- Medical terminology: Learning the Latin and Greek roots used across all healthcare professions so you can read charts, understand diagnoses, and communicate with other providers.
- Anatomy and physiology basics: An overview of major body systems, how they function, and what happens when disease disrupts them.
- Infection control and safety: Handwashing protocols, personal protective equipment, bloodborne pathogen awareness, and OSHA workplace safety standards specific to healthcare settings.

Students learn what counts as a privacy violation, how electronic health records must be secured, and what happens when a data breach occurs.
Beyond HIPAA, the ethics component covers topics like scope of practice (the legal boundaries of what each type of healthcare worker is allowed to do), mandated reporting requirements for abuse or neglect, advance directives, and the basics of malpractice liability. These aren’t abstract concepts for students. If you go on to earn a certification and work in a clinical setting, violating these rules can end your career or result in legal consequences.
Five Career Pathways in Health Science
One of the course’s main purposes is helping students figure out which corner of healthcare interests them. The health science career cluster is organized into five pathways:
- Therapeutic services: Direct patient care roles like nursing, physical therapy, dental hygiene, and surgical technology.
- Diagnostic services: Jobs focused on running and interpreting tests, including medical laboratory technicians, radiologic technologists, and EKG technicians.
- Health informatics: The data and records side of healthcare, covering medical coding, billing, health information management, and electronic health record systems.
- Support services: Roles that keep healthcare facilities running, such as biomedical equipment repair, environmental services, and food and nutrition services.
- Biotechnology research and development: Laboratory and research positions working on pharmaceuticals, genetic testing, and medical device development.
The introductory course exposes students to all five so they can make informed decisions about which pathway to pursue in later coursework and training.
Certifications Students Can Earn
One of the practical benefits of health science coursework is the ability to earn industry-recognized credentials, sometimes before graduating high school. These certifications give students a head start on employment and demonstrate competency to future employers or college programs. Common certifications available to health science students include:

Not every program offers every certification. Which ones are available depends on your school’s partnerships, instructor qualifications, and state requirements. Some credentials, like HeartSaver CPR/AED and First Aid, may be earned as part of coursework even though they aren’t classified as full industry certifications. Others, like the Biotechnician Assistant Credentialing Exam, are geared toward students headed into lab and research settings.
National Health Science Standards
The curriculum isn’t random. It’s guided by the National Health Science Standards, maintained by the National Consortium for Health Science Education. These standards define what a healthcare worker needs to know and be able to do to contribute to safe, effective patient care. They’re designed to be transferable across many health professions, so the skills you build in an introductory course apply whether you eventually become a nurse, a medical coder, or a lab technician.
The standards are validated on a regular basis by stakeholders from hospitals, professional organizations, credentialing bodies, and state education agencies. The most recent crosswalk update was released in October 2025. For educators, the standards provide a framework for designing courses and assessments. For students, they represent a clear benchmark: if your program is aligned with these standards, the skills you’re learning reflect what the healthcare industry actually expects from entry-level workers.
Who Takes This Course
Most students encounter Principles of Health Science as a career and technical education (CTE) elective in high school, though some community colleges offer equivalent introductory courses. You don’t need a science background to enroll. The course is designed as a starting point, and it assumes no prior healthcare knowledge.
Students who do well and want to continue typically move into more specialized courses, clinical rotations, or certification programs. The introductory course also carries weight on college applications for health-related majors, since it shows genuine interest in the field and familiarity with basic concepts. For students who discover healthcare isn’t for them, the course still builds broadly useful skills in communication, ethics, and workplace safety that transfer to other careers.
