UPS Ground delivers packages within one to five business days anywhere in the contiguous United States. The exact number of days depends on how far the package travels. A shipment moving within the same state might arrive the next business day, while a coast-to-coast delivery will typically take the full five.
What Determines Your Delivery Speed
The single biggest factor is distance between the origin and destination. UPS Ground moves packages by truck rather than by air, so geography directly controls transit time. A package shipped from Chicago to Indianapolis might arrive in one business day. That same package going from Chicago to Los Angeles will likely take four or five.

How Business Days Are Counted
Business days means Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays. If you ship a package on Wednesday and the route has a two-business-day transit time, it arrives Friday. If you ship on Thursday with a three-day transit, it arrives the following Tuesday.
The clock starts when UPS actually picks up or receives the package, not when you print a label. If you drop off a package at a UPS location after its daily cutoff time, or if you schedule a pickup but miss the processing window, UPS counts the next business day as day one. The cutoff for same-day pickup is typically one hour before your scheduled pickup time. Process your shipment after that window and it rolls to the following business day.
Weekend and Saturday Delivery
UPS delivers Ground packages Monday through Saturday to both residential and commercial addresses. Saturday delivery for ground residential shipments carries no additional fee, which means a package shipped on Wednesday with a three-day transit could arrive Saturday instead of waiting until Monday.
UPS does not deliver on Sundays. So if your estimated delivery falls on a Sunday, expect the package the following Monday instead.
No Money-Back Guarantee on Ground
UPS Ground does not come with a service guarantee. The UPS money-back guarantee for late deliveries currently applies only to premium air and international express services like Next Day Air and Worldwide Express. For all other services, including Ground, the guarantee is suspended. That means if your Ground package arrives a day later than the estimated window, you won’t receive a refund on shipping costs.
The one-to-five-day range is an estimate, not a promise. Severe weather, high-volume periods like the holiday season, and incorrect addresses can all push delivery beyond that window.
When Ground Makes Sense
UPS Ground is the most affordable UPS shipping option, and it works well when you don’t need overnight or two-day speed. For shipments within a few hundred miles, Ground often arrives in just one or two business days at a fraction of what air services cost. Even across longer distances, five business days is fast enough for most non-urgent shipments.
