How to Close a PayPal Account (Website & App)

You can close a PayPal account in just a few clicks through the website or the mobile app, but you need to clear out your balance and resolve any open issues first. The process itself takes less than a minute once those prerequisites are met.

What to Do Before You Close Your Account

PayPal will not let you close an account that still has money in it, has an active limitation, or has unresolved disputes or claims. Before you start the closure process, take care of these items:

  • Withdraw your balance. Transfer any remaining PayPal balance to your linked bank account. Standard transfers typically take one to three business days. If your balance shows zero, you’re good to go.
  • Cancel recurring payments. If you use PayPal for subscriptions or automatic billing (streaming services, software, gym memberships), cancel those agreements first. Otherwise they may attempt to charge after closure and create complications. You can find active automatic payments under Settings > Payments > Manage automatic payments.
  • Resolve open disputes or claims. Any pending transaction disputes, buyer protection claims, or seller cases must be fully closed before PayPal will allow account closure.
  • Lift account limitations. If PayPal has placed a limitation on your account (often due to identity verification requests or suspicious activity flags), you’ll need to resolve whatever triggered it before closing.
  • Download your transaction history. Once the account is closed, you lose access to your records. Go to Activity, set your date range, and download your statements. This is especially important for tax purposes if you’ve received payments through the account.

If you have pending transactions that haven’t fully cleared yet, wait for them to complete. A payment that’s still processing will block the closure.

How to Close Your Account on the Website

Log in to PayPal at paypal.com, then follow these steps:

  • Click the gear icon to go to Settings.
  • Look for “Close your account” under Account options.
  • Click Close Account and confirm.

PayPal may ask you to confirm your identity or re-enter your password during this process. Once you confirm, the account is closed immediately.

How to Close Your Account on the App

Open the PayPal app on your phone and tap the profile icon (usually in the top left or bottom of the screen, depending on your device). From there, tap “Close your account” and confirm. The same prerequisites apply: zero balance, no open disputes, and no account limitations.

What Happens After You Close the Account

Once closed, you can no longer send or receive money through that account, and you lose access to your transaction history. PayPal retains your data internally per its privacy policy, but you won’t be able to log in and view anything.

If someone sends money to your old PayPal email address after closure, the payment will not go through. The sender will see an error or the payment will be returned. However, your email address is not immediately freed up for use on a new PayPal account. PayPal typically holds onto that association for a period of time, so if you plan to open a fresh account with the same email, you may need to wait or use a different address.

Any chargebacks or disputes that arise after closure (for example, a buyer files a claim on a transaction from before you closed) can still be processed by PayPal. Closing your account does not eliminate your liability for past transactions. If PayPal determines you owe money from a chargeback, they may attempt to collect from your linked bank account or send the debt to collections.

If PayPal Won’t Let You Close

The most common reason closure fails is a balance you didn’t realize was there, sometimes as small as a few cents from a partial refund or currency conversion. Check your balance carefully, including any secondary currency balances if you’ve received payments in foreign currencies.

If your account is limited and you can’t resolve the limitation through the steps PayPal provides (typically uploading ID or confirming personal information), contact PayPal’s customer support directly. You can reach them through the Message Center in your account or by calling the number listed on the Contact Us page. In some cases, a support agent can close a limited account on your behalf after verifying your identity.

If you have a business account with multiple users, you’ll need to be the primary account holder to initiate closure. Remove any secondary users or permissions before attempting to close. The closure steps are otherwise the same as for a personal account.
