Joining Amway is free. You register online at Amway.com as an Independent Business Owner (IBO), and there’s no upfront registration fee. The process takes about 15 minutes, though you should understand what you’re signing up for before you start, including the realistic earning potential and ongoing costs.
Eligibility Requirements
You must be at least 16 years old and have a U.S. address on file. You’ll need to provide your legal name, date of birth, email address, and either a Social Security Number or a completed W-9 form. If you’d rather not submit your SSN online, you can email a W-9 directly to Amway’s tax forms department.
Non-residents can register without a visa if they won’t be traveling to the United States. If you plan to be in the U.S., your visa must permit you to operate a business. Student visas don’t qualify.
Step-by-Step Registration
Go to Amway.com and click the drop-down menu in the top right corner. Select “Register,” then choose “Register as IBO.” From there, the process follows a straightforward sequence:
- Enter your information. Fill in your name, email, mobile phone number, date of birth, tax information, and address. Use your legal first and last name, and make sure your mobile number isn’t already tied to another Amway account.
- Confirm your email. After clicking “Sign Up,” you’ll receive a confirmation email. Click the link inside it within seven days to create your Amway ID.
- Add a co-owner (optional). If you want to run the business with a spouse or partner, select “Add a Co-owner.” They’ll also need to confirm their email and create their own Amway ID.
- Review and sign the agreement. Read the Registration Agreement, which includes the Amway Income Disclosure. Check the box to accept the terms, verify your details, and e-sign. Click “Submit” to finish.
Amway’s standard process involves being connected with a sponsor, an existing IBO who serves as your initial point of contact and mentor. If you don’t already know someone in Amway, the site also offers a path to register without a sponsor.
What It Costs
The initial registration fee is $0. You won’t pay anything to sign up. However, if you choose to continue your Amway business after the first contract year, you’ll pay a $71 annual renewal fee. That fee is subject to change.
Beyond the renewal, your main ongoing cost is the products themselves. As an IBO, you can purchase Amway products at IBO cost for personal use or resale. There’s no mandatory inventory purchase requirement, and you’re not locked into buying a minimum amount each month to stay active. That said, building a customer base or earning bonuses typically involves purchasing and demonstrating products, so most IBOs do spend money on inventory.
What You Can Sell
IBOs get access to Amway’s full product line at wholesale (IBO cost) pricing. The catalog spans nutrition and supplements (Nutrilite is their flagship brand), beauty and skincare products, and home care items. You sell through your own personalized Amway website, in person, or through social media. Customers can also order directly through Amway.com linked to your IBO account.
How the Compensation Works
Amway pays IBOs through a combination of retail markup on products you sell directly and performance bonuses based on the sales volume generated by you and any IBOs you recruit (your “team”). The more volume your network produces, the higher your bonus percentage climbs. Advancing through recognition levels, called “pin levels,” unlocks higher bonus rates and additional leadership bonuses.
The compensation structure rewards building a team of other IBOs underneath you, which is the defining characteristic of a multilevel marketing (MLM) model. Your earnings depend heavily on how large and active your downline network becomes, not just your own personal sales.
Realistic Earnings
Before you register, Amway requires you to review their Income Disclosure, and it’s worth reading carefully. According to Amway’s own 2024 data, the average U.S. IBO at the Founders Platinum level and below earned $723 for the entire year before expenses. Among those who actually reported product sales (personally or through their team), the average rose to $1,199 before expenses.
Forty percent of U.S. IBOs received no payment from Amway at all during 2024. Among those who did receive at least one payment, the median earnings for the top 50% were just $539 for the year. Even the top 10% of IBOs who received payments had median annual earnings of $4,478.
The higher pin levels paint a different picture. IBOs who reached Platinum status averaged $22,928 before expenses, and Founders Platinum averaged $46,423. But reaching those levels requires building a substantial team and sustaining high sales volume over time, something a small fraction of IBOs accomplish.
All of these figures are before expenses, meaning they don’t account for the cost of products you purchased, the $71 annual renewal, any training materials or events you attended, or transportation and other business costs.
Returning Products if You Leave
If you decide to leave Amway, you have the right to return unsold, currently marketable products. Your first option is selling your remaining inventory to an upline IBO at a price you both agree on. If that doesn’t work out, Amway will repurchase the products directly, though they’ll deduct a 10% service charge for handling and processing, plus any freight costs. Amway also claws back any performance bonuses or leadership bonuses that were originally paid on those returned products.
Even if you’re not leaving the business, Amway allows buybacks in cases of financial hardship or other exceptional circumstances.
What to Expect After You Join
Once your registration is confirmed, you’ll have access to Amway’s product catalog at IBO pricing and your own online storefront. If you registered with a sponsor, they’ll typically reach out to help you get started, often with training calls, product demonstrations, or introductions to their team’s resources.
Many IBOs invest time in learning the product line before they start selling. Amway offers its own training materials, and individual teams often have their own systems, including books, webinars, and conferences. Some of these team-specific tools carry additional costs that aren’t part of Amway’s official fee structure, so ask your sponsor upfront what expenses to expect beyond the products themselves.
Your contract renews annually. If you decide not to renew, you simply skip the $71 payment and your IBO status lapses. There’s no long-term commitment or cancellation penalty beyond losing your position in the network.
