What are some of the most important qualities for a successful scrum master?

The interviewer may ask this question to learn more about your leadership skills and how you apply them in a team setting. Your answer should include examples of the qualities that helped you succeed as a scrum master, such as communication, organization and time management.

Example: “A successful scrum master needs to be organized, detail-oriented and able to communicate effectively with their team members. I find it helpful to use tools like project management software to keep track of my tasks and collaborate with other team members. How would you describe the role of a scrum master within a team?

When I train new employees, I start by explaining what agile is and why it’s beneficial to use this method of software development. Then, I explain the different steps involved in a scrum project, such as sprint planning, daily standup meetings and sprint reviews.”

When is it appropriate to ask a Product Owner questions about their requirements?

As a senior Scrum Master, you need to be able to understand the needs of your clients and communicate them effectively. An interviewer may ask this question to see if you can balance client needs with company goals. In your answer, try to show that you know when it’s appropriate to challenge a Product Owner on their requirements and when it’s better to accept them as is.

Example: “I think it’s important to always respect my clients’ wishes. However, I also believe in challenging assumptions and asking questions when something doesn’t make sense. For example, if a client asks for a feature that would take six months to develop but they only want to pay for two months of development time, I’d probably ask them why they wanted such a long-term feature. We want our scrum masters to be mentors to our team members. How would you go about doing that?

This question is an opportunity to show your leadership skills and how you can help others grow. Your answer should include a specific example of when you helped someone on your team improve their skills or knowledge.

Example: “I would start by asking them what they want to learn more about, then I’d find resources for them to read up on the topic. If it’s something that requires hands-on experience, I might offer to pair program with them so they can get some practice in. For instance, one of my teammates wanted to learn more about test-driven development, so I found a free online course we could work through together.”

Describe your process for conducting a sprint review.

The interviewer may ask you to describe your process for conducting a sprint review. This question can help the interviewer understand how you use your leadership skills and communication abilities to facilitate meetings with stakeholders, clients or other project team members. Example: “I am highly qualified for this position because of my extensive knowledge of Agile development methods. I’ve been working as a senior scrum master for five years now, so I have plenty of experience with implementing sprints, managing teams and helping organizations achieve their goals. Which scrum framework do you prefer working with and why?

This question is a great way to see how much experience the candidate has with scrum frameworks. It’s important for senior scrum masters to have experience working with multiple frameworks, so you can ask this question to determine if they are willing to do so.

Example: “I prefer working with the Scrum framework because it allows me to work with all of the necessary tools I need to complete my projects effectively. However, I also understand that other frameworks like Kanban and XP are beneficial in different ways. In my last role, we used both Scrum and Kanban together to help us achieve our goals.”

What do you think is the most challenging part of being a scrum master?

Example: “The most challenging part of being a scrum master is helping the team members work together effectively. How often do you think scrum masters should meet with the entire team?

Example: “I think scrum masters should meet with the entire team at least once a week, but I also like to have smaller group meetings with specific teams within the larger group.
